Sure, the PDF format is universally accepted, but that’s no excuse for sending out scanned documents that are skewed and headache-inducing! With Option 2, I have had no issues attempting to Deskew any type of color documents at all, but I believe you stated there may be some overall Quality loss issues when attempting to Deskew color documents?
My book scanner (see here) creates images like these:Is there any way to cut them out automatically and possibly even deskew them, so that the OCR (tesseract) works better?
My method now, which is simple, stupid but kinda works, is to create the RGB-average of the first, say, 20 lines of the images (assuming that there's a border around the book itself), and then go down line by line, taking the average, and if it is like at least 5% or something higher in one line (assuming paper is mostly white), then the above gets cut.
I do the same then from left to right, right to left and bottom to top.
The results are mostly Ok (especially when creating images with a better camera than the example image here), but they're not perfect.
How to do that without putting any manual work into this, once the scanning process started, while getting good (or, preferably, very good) results, using only free software?
Is there anything like that available?

When scanning documents, it is best to align them with the horizontal axis. Sometimes the image is just a few pixels offset, but the document looks much clearer when aligned. This makes it easier to work with grids, straight lines etc.
It is very unlikely that PixEdit will fail to detect the skew of a document, but if this should happen you may use the manual deskew tool to indicate the skew of any line that should be aligned horizontally or vertically. PixEdit will perform the deskew operation as soon as you have indicated the skew.
To select a page range, type in the page range(s) or select the pages directly in the document tree before using this command.
